Experience of Their Lives: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan Businessmen Paddle and Portage to Hudson Bay in 1890, The by Diedre Stevens, 2023
In the 1800s, the future looked bright for the twin cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and Ontario. Speculation in land and mines was rampant. Into this scenario was born a plan to build a railroad that would connect the Canadian Sault with Hudson Bay on the Artic Ocean. To explore the possibilities a party of mostly American explorers was mounted to trace the Missinaibi River, along whose banks the railroad would run, in the summer of 1890. In hopes of attracting investors’ dollars to the plan a newspaper reporter and photographer joined the group. This book combines the newspaper accounts and the dramatic photos of the grueling expedition and the exotic world they found in the Hudson’s Bay post of Moose Factory Island that was their destination.
