The original Ashmun Street Bridge across the power canal opened in about 1900. The vehicle was known as \"The Pickford Stage,\" which apparently made scheduled trips between the Sault and Pickford. Note the well-dressed conductor. In a higher resolution version, we can see that the driver is also in uniform, wearing a hat and tie. (The steering wheel is on the right side of the vehicle) Judging by the number of passengers on board, the trip must have been an intimate one. Horse-and-buggy traffic was probably still common, as the sign on the bridge states \"$25 Fine For Riding Or Driving Over This Bridge Faster Than a Walk. At that time, the business in the building just north of Pingatore's at 711 Ashmun was occupied by Freedman Wholesale, a distributor of candy, beverages, cigars, and the like to small stores in the area. That building was known as the Fisk Block. For a time, Edward \"Chum\" Leask had his State farm Insurance Office there. Sometime later, Pingatore Cleaners expanded to occupy the building. The two billboards are advertising the First National Bank, and \"Fatima.\" We can't make out any more on the \"Fatima\" billboard, but there was a brand of cigarettes with that name at the time, which is probably the subject. Just to the right of the billboards is the Vanderhook Furniture business. In the early 1900s, it was common that furniture makers also built coffins, so furniture and undertaking was a common combination. The entry for the business in the 1927 Polk Directory reads \"Vanderhook & Co. Furniture, House Furnishings, Carpets, Rugs, and Undertaking Phone 91-W\" To the left of the billboards is another furniture store; we can read on the awning \"Rothwell Furniture,\" and the entry in the Polk Directory indicates that it was owned by one Benjamin Rothwell. Before he owned the business, he worked for the Raymond Furniture Company, located at the same spot. Walter Materna Collection, neg. #1706")
